Steve and Jean Maruszczak began their sausage business in the back of their home in 1947. Together they made sausage during the day and in the evening Steve would go store to store selling their sausage throughout Northwest Indiana, all the way to LaPorte, IN.
After three years, this son of Ukrainian and Polish immigrants opened a meat processing plant on 169th Street in Hammond, IN, which at its peak employed twenty-five employees. They brought Eastern European dishes including their famous Smoked Polish Sausage to the tables of area households along with other products such as: Prasky, Kiszka, Bolszewik (French Loaf), Veal Wieners¸ Bologna, Krakow, Hurka, Head Cheese, and of course Fresh Polish Sausage. The tradition continued until 1985 when Steve and Jean retired and the company was operated by a local family for many years.
In December 2008, Steve and Jean's grandson Charles decided to continue the Maruszczak tradition by re-introducing many of his grandparent's traditional recipes. Building on the great reputation of his grandparents, Charles began by manufacturing their famous Old World Smoked Polish Sausage. Next he brought back specialty items, like the Kiszka and Bolshevik (French Loaf). Charles then decided to use his grandfather's recipe to make a Smoked Polish Sausage.
Following in his grandparent's footprints¸ Maruszczak products can now be found in many of your favorite local grocery and specialty stores throughout Indiana (all the way to LaPorte!) and parts of Illinois. Maruszczak products are all manufactured using the original recipes and flavors created by Steve and Jean Maruszczak when they began the tradition in their home in 1947. This is a family tradition we are certain that Steve and Jean would be proud!
